Nusa Penida as a day trip: a realistic plan

Nusa Penida in one day is possible if you pick one side of the island, take an early boat and book the return before you go. A timetable that works, with costs.

Nusa Penida looks small on the map: about 20 km across, 40 minutes by fast boat from Sanur. The roads tell a different story. They are narrow, steep and slow, and the famous viewpoints are on opposite sides of the island. A day trip works well if you keep it simple.

Can you really see Nusa Penida in a day?

Yes, if you choose one side of the island. The west coast (Kelingking, Broken Beach, Angel's Billabong, Crystal Bay) and the east coast (Diamond Beach, Atuh, the Thousand Islands viewpoint) are 1–1.5 hours apart by road. Trying to see both in one day means most of it in a car.

Your other choice is the sea: a snorkel trip with manta rays in the morning, then a slow afternoon near the harbour.

What does a realistic day look like?

A west-coast day, leaving from Sanur:

TimeWhat
06:30Pickup from a south Bali hotel
07:30Fast boat leaves Sanur (be at the counter by 07:00)
08:10Arrive at Banjar Nyuh, meet your driver
09:15Kelingking viewpoint
11:00Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong
12:30Lunch
13:45Crystal Bay: swim or rest
15:00Drive back to Banjar Nyuh
15:30Check in for the return boat
16:00Fast boat to Sanur, arrive about 16:40

The times are based on our sample timetable; see the live one on Sanur to Nusa Penida and Nusa Penida to Sanur.

Which boats should I book?

Take a boat that leaves Sanur by 08:00 and lands at Banjar Nyuh for the west coast, or at Buyuk for the east. For the return, the 15:30–16:30 boats give you a full day without rushing. Book the return before you go: afternoon boats fill up in high season, and you check in 30 minutes before departure.

Avoid a return earlier than about 15:00 unless you only want half a day.

How do I get around on the island?

Most visitors hire a car with driver for the day. Drivers wait at the harbours, or you can add one to your booking. Scooters are cheap, but the roads to Kelingking and Diamond Beach are steep and broken in places, and accidents happen. If you are not an experienced rider, take a car.

How about snorkelling instead?

Our own day trip pairs the morning boat with a 4-spot snorkel trip from Banjar Nyuh: Manta Point, Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay and Wall Point, starting at 09:00 and back around 12:30. The builder only shows boat pairs where the snorkel trip fits, with time to check in for the boat back. The afternoon is free for lunch and Crystal Bay.

What will it cost?

Besides the boat tickets, budget per foreign adult for:

  • The island fee: IDR 25,000, cashless.
  • About IDR 25,000 per listed attraction (Kelingking, Broken Beach, Angel's Billabong, Crystal Bay).
  • A car with driver for the day, shared by the group.
  • Lunch, water and cash for parking.

Our fees guide lists every local fee with sources.

What should I bring?

  • Passport and your QR e-ticket.
  • Shorts and sandals for a beach boarding at Sanur.
  • A dry bag, sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water.
  • Cash in small notes, plus a card for the cashless island fee.
  • Proper shoes if you plan to walk down to Kelingking Beach. The path is steep and slow; most people stay at the viewpoint.

What if the sea is rough?

When the harbour master suspends crossings, no boats sail. If your boat is cancelled, we move you to another departure for free or refund you in full. Some months are rougher than others; see sea conditions by month.

Should I stay overnight instead?

If you want both the west and the east, or a slower day with the snorkel trip and the cliffs, stay one or two nights. Then you can land at the harbour closest to your hotel. Our harbour guide helps you choose.

FAQ

Quick answers

All questions

How long is the fast boat from Sanur to Nusa Penida?

About 40 minutes (30–45 depending on the operator and the sea). Sanur to Nusa Lembongan is about 35 minutes. Padang Bai to Gili Trawangan takes about 1.5 hours, and Sanur or Serangan to the Gilis 2¼–3½ hours with stops.

Which harbour on Nusa Penida will I arrive at?

Most Sanur boats arrive at Banjar Nyuh on the north-west coast — closest to Kelingking, Broken Beach, Angel's Billabong and Crystal Bay. Some arrive at Buyuk on the north-east coast, better for Diamond Beach and Atuh. Every result shows the arrival harbour. Penida roads are slow: allow 1–1.5 hours to the far side.

Will my feet get wet when boarding at Sanur?

Probably. Sanur's new harbour (opened 2022) has a jetty, but many Penida and Lembongan boats still load from the beach depending on the operator and the tide. Expect to wade ankle- to knee-deep: wear shorts and sandals and keep your phone in a dry bag. Jungut Batu (Lembongan) and Gili Air are beach landings too. Serangan uses a jetty.

Can I combine my fast boat with a snorkel trip?

Yes. On Nusa Penida trips you can add our own 4-spot snorkel trip (Manta Point, Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay, Wall Point) as an extra. The booking page checks that it fits between your boats. The marine park fee is shown before you pay.
